General Statement:

The Middle School Program provides a system of religious education within a framework of the practical issues that hold particular relevance to young people. The Discovering Program focuses on practical moral development by engaging the students in thoughtful reflection and discussion on such issues as character development, relationship building, and moral decision making.  The Program prepares young people to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation with the authentic intentionality to engage in an active life of discipleship in Christ.

Grade Six

 

Understanding Myself -

This six week course encourage students to recognize and understand the factors that shape their self-conception, to identify individual giftedness, and refine personal value, to target areas requiring growth and improvement, and to assess the role of the Catholic Christian faith in their lives.

 

Learning to Communicate -

This six week course explores effective interpersonal communication, helps students to understand and practice communication skills, and allows them to assess their strengths and weaknesses regarding healthy communication.

 

Making Decisions -

This six week course teaches the decision-making skills needed when adolescents encounter tough choices, including moral dilemmas.  This course helps them to identify influences on their decision making and to consider the consequences of their decisions.

 

Becoming Friends -

This six week course centers on starting and maintaining healthful friendships and ending weak or destructive friendships, differentiates between healthful and unhealthful relationships with persons of the same or opposite sex and with significant adults, and relates human friendship to friendship with God.

 

Grade Seven

 

Meeting Jesus -

This six week session helps students to clarify their understanding of Jesus and his message and encourages them to develop a deeper relationship with Him through prayer.

 

Praying -

Praying invites young people to identify and reflect on various images of God and provides them with opportunities to practice a variety of prayer forms.

 

Growing Up Sexually -

This course helps students to understand and discuss the changes associated with puberty and to apply the Roman Catholic approach to issues of sexual morality.

 

Dealing With Tough Times -

This six week course provides students with the understanding and skills needed to deal with the difficult experiences of life that are associated with their age group.  The course focuses on such issues of loneliness, rejection, stress, and loss, and it suggests specific approached to help students learn to cope.

 

Grade Eight

 

Gathering to Celebrate -

This course brings students to an understanding and appreciation of the Catholic Church’s seven sacraments as rites that celebrate Christ’s living presence and activity within the community of faith.

 

Being Catholic -

This course identifies specific aspects of Catholicism, enables students to consider what it means to be a Catholic Christian, and helps them integrate a sense of Catholic identity with their identity as persons.

 

Seeking Justice -

This course focuses on human dignity, respect, compassion, and responsibility for creation while connecting these themes to the lives students.  Grounded in Sacred Scripture and in Catholic social teaching, this course help students face justice and peace issues in ways appropriate to their age.

 

Archbishop Wuerl’s Confirmation Preparation Series

This is a four week series of video presentations followed by short lectures and group discussions reinforced by workbook study and reflection to help students prepare for their reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
