General Statement:

 

High School youth gather weekly for current “Hot Topic” Mini-Courses. Youth are able to have faith, food, and fun while deepening their understanding an appreciation of their Catholic faith.

 

 

Course Offerings:

 

Exploring Catholicism: Become exposed to the various structures, beliefs, and practices that make you uniquely Catholic.  Have an opportunity to ask what it means to be a Catholic and how Catholics practice and celebrate their faith tradition.

 

Belief in the Media Culture: Recognize the power of popular culture in your world and examine its effect on your life as a believer.  Identify various ways  in which the mass media communicate and promotes certain values, attitudes and behaviors.  Explore the media’s role as a graced locus to uncover God’s presence in the world today.

 

Dating and Love: Understand the dating relationship as a continuation of a process of self-discovery.  Recognize the differences between mature love and infatuation.  Discuss appropriate physical expressions of affection in a dating relationship, the physical and emotional pressure you commonly experience.  Develop Christian values and principles in dating with personal struggles and issues that may develop within dating and develop Christian responses to the sexual and emotional pressures you might experience.

 

Sacrament - Sacred:  Develop an understanding of the sacramentality of life and the need for sacramental awareness.  Grow in knowledge about the sacraments and gain a better understanding of the place of sacraments in your life.  Learn the significance, richness, and power of symbol and ritual.

 

Taking Charge - Managing Life’s Struggles:  Identify sources of stress and struggle in your life.  Learn that limited stress is a healthy dimension of life and can add to your creative productivity.  Grow in awareness of an ever-present God.  Explore common responses to life’s struggles and identify the network of support that is available to you.

 

Sexuality - Challenges and Choices:  Understand sexuality to include all the ways you experience yourself as male or female (physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual).  Discuss cultural stereotypes and images of what it means to be a male or female.  Recognize Jesus as the model of the fully integrated, sexual person and gain an understanding of the Church ‘s teaching on sexuality.  Discuss the physical, emotional and sexual developments and learn ways to deal with common adolescent changes in a healthy and balanced way.

 

Praying All Ways: Discover the role of prayer in you life.  Learn about the experience a variety of prayer forms and styles.  Recognize that prayer is a basis for a Gospel-centered actions.

 

Justice -  Building God’s Reign:  Explore justice themes in the scripture.  Learn the understanding of the connection between rights and responsibilities.  Be introduced to the foundational elements of Catholic social teaching.  Be challenged to responsible action.  Discover your power to act for justice, the value of working cooperatively and become involved in efforts for a positive social change.
